Among the six new exhibitors at the Salzburg Christmas market this year are, among others, the Old Town traditional craft business “Heimatkunst” of the Lackner family with KuK signs, a farrier from St. Wolfgang, the Antheringen family business SonnenMoor and a Salzburg market driver who sells textiles form of traditional blue printing. Christmas market chairman Wolfgang Haider is very pleased with the high quality of the products on offer. “Many of our exhibitors are artists in their fields and offer unique handmade pieces. The offering ranges from wooden toys, bouquets of spices, soaps, glass and ceramic items, candles, locksmith products, carved wooden figures to elaborately decorated Christmas tree baubles.”

The operators of the Salzburg Christmas market are particularly happy about the 200th anniversary of the Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!. Free tours of the Christmas market, which take place every Monday, provide information about the history of the world-famous Christmas carol and present the oldest and most traditional craft businesses at the Christmas market, such as the Nagy gingerbread and candle factory, founded in 1879. A special feature will only take place this year: the song “Silent Night! Holy Night!” can usually only be heard on December 24th at the Christmas market. However, as part of the free choir singing “Sing with!”, amateur choristers can rehearse the song in the original two-part version with a professional choir director from the Salzburg Choir Association every Tuesday in the anniversary year and then present it to the audience on Cathedral Square.

Also new this Advent season is a specially brewed Stiegl mulled beer, which is only available at the Salzburg Christmas market. In addition, from this year onwards, the operators of the Christmas market will be supporting the organization and marketing of the traditional Christmas tree market on Residenzplatz. The Christmas tree sale begins on December 8th and the opening times are adapted to those of the old town shops for the first time. This is particularly popular with Salzburg residents. Local Christmas trees can be easily selected and put aside and picked up by car at a later date or transported home free of charge by trolleybus from mid-December.

More than 90 events convey authentic customs

“The Salzburg Christmas market wants to convey authentic and local customs to visitors,” emphasizes Haider. “More than 26 cultural and traditional events are on the program up to and including December 90th. The highlights include the traditional tower blowing, the daily performances by choirs from Salzburg and the surrounding area, the Krampus and Perchten run as well as the performances of the Salzburg Christ child and angel. Instead of on Saturday, this year the Christ child will be on Sunday afternoon for the first time from 16 p.m delight children's hearts. “One reason for this is that we want to make the quieter Sunday a family day,” says Haider.

Quote from Dipl. Ing. Harald Preuner, Mayor of the City of Salzburg:“The Salzburg Christmas market has a long tradition among our local audience. The people of Salzburg love the wide range of high-quality handicrafts and regional delicacies. The numerous free cultural and traditional events, which also take place on the quieter weekdays from Monday to Friday, make visiting the Salzburg Christmas market particularly worthwhile.”

Quote Leo Bauernberger, Managing Director of SalzburgerLand Tourismus: “The Salzburg Christmas market is an ideal brand ambassador for the state of Salzburg. The images of the Salzburg Christmas market are admired all over the world and make Salzburg a sought-after travel destination for visitors from all over the world. For the hoteliers of our winter sports resorts, the Salzburg Christmas market is one of the attractions that their guests absolutely have to visit.”

The Christmas market is most popular with the local public

The most popular is the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, which is completely barrier-free, especially with the local audience. Around 70 percent of the approximately one million visitors come from Salzburg and the neighboring federal states. “Many people in Salzburg use the Christmas market as a central meeting point in the old town. They are regular visitors and have known the individual stalls and their products since they were children,” says Haider.

In total, around 97 people work at the 400 market stalls at the Christmas market. The city of Salzburg and the merchants in the city center benefit from around 230.000 overnight stays during the Advent season and an estimated tourist added value from day visitors and overnight guests of around 60 million euros. The Salzburg Christmas Market is the largest annual market event in the state of Salzburg.

Recently, the British daily newspaper Evening Standard ranked the Christmas market in Salzburg's Old Town first in a comparison of 17 Advent markets, followed by the markets in Strasbourg and Prague. Last year, the TV channel CNN (https://cnn.it/2eEIv9h) and the US magazine Forbes (https://bit.ly/2hOEyxJ ) the Salzburg Christmas market is one of the most worth seeing in the whole world.
